The KCLS Leadership Team met on May 22 to refine the criteria for the candidate search, discuss retention of a search firm, and develop a tentative timetable for process milestones.
Staff will be able to build on information and material that was previously gathered in order to attract a diverse candidate pool. It is expected that the process will take anywhere from six to nine months.
Currently KCLS Foundation board member Stephen A. Smith is interim director after Gary Wasdin, hired after a nationwide search, left after two years in a negotiated resignation for "violating the library's code of conduct".
The previous director, Bill Ptacek, served in that position from 1989 to February 2014, when he left to be CEO of the Calgary Public Library in Alberta, Canada. The Director before Ptacek headed KCLS from 1962 to 1988.
Founded in 1942, the King County Library System operates 48 libraries, with an annual operating budget of $94 million and 1,300 staff. Recognized in 2011 as Library Journal’s Library of the Year, KCLS is one of the largest and busiest library systems in the country.
KCLS includes libraries in Richmond Beach, Shoreline, Lake Forest Park, and Kenmore.
