Forked tail gull brings bird watchers to Richmond Beach

Text and photos by Wayne Pridemore

Excited bird watchers flocked to the old oil docks at Richmond Beach this weekend.

The excitement was caused by the appearance of a Sabine's gull, also known as a forked tail gull. This is a rare appearance for this species in the Puget Sound area.

The wingtips are elegantly lined with black

The bird was first spotted Saturday at Carkeek Park by a well known bird watcher. The next two days it took up residency at Richmond Beach.

The Sabine is a small gull, 11 to 13 in length, weighing 5 to 7 ounces. Its bill is black with a yellow tip.

The bird has a very high-pitched and squeaking call. The eyes are circled by a red ring.

The Sabine breeds in the Arctic in the summer and in the fall most of the population migrates south and winters at sea in the Pacific off western South America.

Our little local celebrity must fly to a different beat in its route selection.
