Watching our Seed Stories Grow
Fifth graders have been working hard for the past several weeks on their narrative writing skills. They have chosen a small moment from their lives and dedicated day after day to perfecting their writing. As we approach the end of our narrative unit, students are ready to cap their stories off with the perfect ending. We want our narrative endings to speak our readers, to leave them wanting more without leaving them unsatisfied. This can be a tricky concept to master so we wanted to practice before finalizing our own.
Once we were confident with the many types of endings we returned to a narrative we have been using throughout our unit-the story of two sisters and their dog, Luka, who was viciously attacked while on a walk. We read the story just up to the very end. At this point I asked students to take what they knew about the story so far, as well as their knowledge of narrative endings, to create an effective conclusion.
Students wrote their own endings independently before sharing with their shoulder partner in a Time-Pair-Share structure. This gave them the opportunity to hear some feedback and make corrections before sharing with more of their classmates through Stand-up, Hand-up, Pair-up. The fifth graders loved listening to one another’s endings, some making them laugh and others making them nearly cry.
Tomorrow we will take what we’ve learned and practiced and apply it to our own small moment stories. We will be publishing these stories later this week. I know we are all excited to read these final pieces after all these weeks of hard work.
