Kinders Can Code!
Every year Hour of Code is an opportunity to provide students with exposure to what programmers do and to introduce computer science to children. According to the Hour of Code website "It helps nurture problem-solving skills, logic and creativity. By starting early, students will have a foundation for success in any 21st-century career path."Our kindergarten students began their learning path in computer science by using Code and Go mice. These mice navigate by the children's use of commands. They use the color coded arrows on the top of the mice to program it. The students took turns programming to navigate the library layout. Each success was met with cheers!
This week the students continued their exploration of coding by using the app Kodable. In this app the students are eager to help the furry aliens, known as Fuzzes to explore the colorful planet, Smeeborg. This is the planet the the Fuzzes have crashed on and it is up to the kids to help them through all of the Technomazes on that planet's surface. Similar to the Code and Go mice, the students have to use arrows to navigate their Fuzz through the many levels of this app. Not only do they work to correctly move the Fuzzes in the correct direction, but they are challenged by the addition of obstacles that require two levels of coding to pass by.
Both of these tools offer easy to understand and navigate introductions to computer science and programming. The kids are anxious to do it all again. Learning coding is fun!
