Creating a Visual Story by Sketchnoting
We all know how hard it is to recall facts or remember things if we don’t write it down.
Second graders are studying earth systems, focusing on the essential question: ‘How does
earth’s surface change, and what forces cause it to change?’. Mrs. Sayre introduced students
to Sketchnoting as a way to put the main ideas on paper without writing down all the
information. With Sketchnoting students were able to create a visual story of what shapes our
land by using pictures, symbols and a few words to retell the important parts.

(magma), outer core, and inner core. Then on to what makes up the earth’s crust: grass, soil, rock, trees, and plants. Next they sketched some of the natural forces that cause our land to change: volcanoes, wind, rain, floods, hurricanes, and glaciers. Lastly they showed how people affect the earth’s surface by removing trees and other plants from the land.
The students’ concentration on the process of creating their sketches was impressive.
At the end of the lesson students were able to describe through their illustrations those forces
that cause the earth’s surface to change. Some of the events happen quickly and some occur
over a long period of time.
