Giving Choices

We make choices everyday, and sometimes these choices are ones we don't even realize we are making. For example, which way we drive to the store, the amount of milk we put in our cereal at breakfast or even if we continue to read this blog. All of these tasks require us to make a plethora of choices; all of which give us a sense of control over our lives and wellbeing.

Believe it or not, kids also like to feel in control. Unfortunately, they usually are not given the same number of opportunities to make choices. We, as adults, tend to make choices for kids and tell them what to do because, let's face it, we know better....right? Well, for some kids, this lack of choice can lead to bad behavior and defiance. Think about it. What if there was someone standing over your shoulder telling you which way to drive, how to make your breakfast or whether or not you could partake in a favorite activity. This would be frustrating and even downright maddening for some of us and may result in us lashing out at others. This is how some kids feel all the time. And for this reason, it is important that we teach kids how to make choices and provide them LOTS of opportunities to do so.

Now, I'm not suggesting to let the animals run free! But maybe allowing a child to choose between using a pencil or a marker to complete an activity or giving them a choice of where they sit is a good first step in providing these opportunities and teaching them the value of making good choices. Just remember, it would be hard to learn how to write without someone first putting a pencil in your hand. Learning how to make good choices follows the same philosophy; without the opportunity, there is no chance to learn.
