Hats Off to Reading
The month of March has much to celebrate but we begin the month with Read Across America. This program is a nationwide reading celebration that takes place every year on March 2-Dr. Seuss's birthday! All across the country schools and libraries can participate by bringing the joy of reading to children.This year we expanded our celebration through a variety of activities for the students. In kindergarten, the students listened to The Cat in the Hat and then were given an engineering challenge to build the cat's hat out of plastic cups and paper. The goal was to make the "hat" as stable as they could to build it as tall as possible! This effort included teamwork to make sure that the tower didn't fall over. Everyone took turns and when it fell they went to work to figure out why and see if they could build it taller the next time! The students were very proud of their efforts.
Other classes came in to discover more about Dr. Seuss through a breakout. A breakout is a challenge where students must use clues and worksheets to discover the lock combinations to a variety of boxes in the library. The third grade students did a physical breakout where they had to use clues to unlock the boxes, but the sixth grade students did a digital breakout where all of the information was on a website. The locks are unlocked through a series of clues in much the same way as the physical breakout. Collaboration, teamwork and grit are all integral parts of this activity, not to mention engagement and fun!
Our fifth grade students enjoyed a Jeopardy game where they tested their knowledge of all things Seuss. They competed as teams and were stumped by many of the questions. They found strategies to overcome the challenge and ultimately the winning team took a risk and wagered a large amount of points in the Daily Double for the win.
Other classes came into the library to hear Dr. Seuss books being read and to learn a little bit more about why we celebrate reading, Dr. Seuss and teamwork!
