Light It Up BLUE!
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) touches so many of us, and especially those of us in the special education and speech/language pathology communities. With the prevalence at 1 in 68 kids, it’s no surprise that you likely know someone with autism.
Autism impacts a person’s social communication (ability to use language across different social contexts) and sometimes their ability to understand and use language to get their needs and wants met. Restrictive, repetitive patterns are also part of an ASD diagnosis. It sometimes presents with behavioral challenges too, which can have several layers to it, from difficulty processing sensory information, to regulating emotions, to attention difficulty. Social Communication Disorder is similar, but does not include the restrictive, repetitive patterns that are seen in ASD.
Every single person with autism is unique when compared to the next, and that’s why individualized treatment is really important. Some children need significant help, while others only need assistance in certain areas. I’ve had the pleasure of working with many children with ASD and the things I love the most about each of them were the gifts and talents that they had to share with the world. Even though it’s my job to help people with the clinical skills that they are struggling with, I remember their smiles, their hugs, their excitement, and their joy the most.
April 2 is the 10th annual World Autism Awareness Day. Autism Speaks leads the Light it up Blue initiative to spread awareness and acceptance for people with autism. The Chicago Autism Speaks Walk on May 12 is another great way to show your support. We even have a District # 68 team now!
