Characteristics of Good Citizenship
Our final Reading unit ties in perfectly with our Social Studies unit which is exploring Characteristics of Good Citizenship. Second graders are learning how citizens participate in their community, what symbols, songs, and pledges help unite citizens, and learning about some historical figures who have provided wonderful examples of good citizens.
Students got to take part in demonstrating how they can be responsible citizens by participating in a mock election. We read two books My Teacher for President by Kay Winters and Grace for President by Kelly DiPucchio. After doing a character analysis, students were given a ballot to cast their vote at our classroom polling place. They patiently waited in line for their turn. They went into the voting booth and secretly chose who they thought would do the best job as President.
To tie the activity with Math we then created a tally chart, pictograph, bar graph and line plot to visually represent of the results.
The activity was a fun way to teach government and elections to students. We also learned about the electoral college. Students are looking forward to when they turn 18 and will be able to help choose the leaders of our cities, states, and country. Until then, students are inspired to encourage the adults in their life to register to vote and to campaign for their favorite causes and candidates.
