Compound Words in 2nd Grade
This month I have been working with 2nd graders in Mrs. Wojtowicz class on their phonics skills. This week we spent some time learning about syllables, and more specifically, compound words. First, students spent some time learning about what makes a word compound and how to clap out the syllables of a word. Then we had the opportunity to do a cooperative learning structure called quiz-quiz-trade to put together different “small” words in order to make real and fake compound words.
When we came back together as a group the students were able to make the following real words with their cards…
Batman, shellfish, catfish, hotshot, upset, uphill and catnip
Then we shared what words we made that were fake or not real. The students thought these were really funny and we laughed quite a bit. Some of the fake, silly compound words students came up with were…
cathill, hotfish, bathill and upcat
Next week students will continue their work with syllables in words that are not compound and using our strategies to read and write longer and longer words.
