I've had the time of my life!
Given that this will be my last blog at Goodrich since I am retiring at the end of this year, I thought I
would reflect back upon my time as a teacher. Teaching is a second career for me. I worked in the
corporate environment for 25 years before returning to school to become an elementary teacher.
The thing I loved best about teaching were the kids, of course. I have so many wonderful memories
(and some really funny stories) about the children I have taught. I have kept every note and picture
that any student has given me, and since I am slowly packing up my room, have had the opportunity
to reread and remember all the wonderful times I had with my students.
I have been so lucky to spend my entire career at Goodrich School. The staff is warm and wonderful,
and the principal can be a pain but he’s a Cub’s fan so I can overlook the other stuff. I have been
fortunate to have had great teaching partners and I will miss my favorite partner Emily so much
(especially for her fashion advice!)
Another facet of teaching that I loved was the fact that you are basically your own boss. I was able
to create this wonderful world in my classroom where we worked together to learn about the world
around us, become better readers and mathematicians, and grow and laugh and change over the
years.
I became a teacher because I wanted to ‘make a difference.’ And I came to realize I accomplished
this in many small but important ways. Like the time a former student told me she never liked to read
until she had me as a teacher. Or when a parent told me that her son now likes math because when
I teach, it’s obvious that I like math so much. Then there was the time I heard a former student tell a
new kid that I was the best teacher he ever had.
I have plans for my new life. I’m going to work on a political campaign this fall, go to Cub’s games
on a school day, travel, take classes at local museums, walk my pups, enjoy more deep water
unning classes at the Y, have long lunches with friends, and sleep in.
Teaching has given me a world of wonderful experiences, friends, and children I loved as much
as I loved my own. I have been able to watch kids light up when they finally ‘get it’, make friends,
problem solve, make mistakes and enjoy life.
I will miss this life: the kids, the parents, and all of the people at Goodrich who helped make my
teaching experience the best job ever.
