Speech & Hearing Month
May is Better Speech & Hearing Month!
Next week begins the month long celebration of communication for Better Speech and Hearing Month. The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association aims to educate the public on the vast amount of communication and swallowing disorders that are out there, and how a speech-language pathologist or audiologist can help. Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) help patients and clients across the entire lifespan, from birth to the geriatric population, in a wide variety of healthcare, clinic, and public settings.
Within our schools, it's my job to help students with communication disorders, which can be broken down into many parts: articulation disorders, phonological disorders, childhood apraxia of speech, difficulty with receptive or expressive language, pragmatic language (social communication), voice disorders, and fluency disorders. All of these areas can be influenced by many factors, and it's also my job to figure out the puzzle so that I can help each child work towards their potential. Luckily, I am part of a fantastic special education team here at Goodrich, and we work together to make sure we are meeting kids' needs in each of our areas, but as one unit.
I am so excited to have the opportunity to shape each student's future for the better, and to help them with the skills that are the hardest for them within their day. It's an amazing feeling to see a student's strategy suddenly click, or when their years of determination gets them to "graduation" from our services.
For more information on specific communication disorders, please visit www.asha.org or reach out to me or your local SLP. We'd love to help!
