Welcome Back Readers!
What did you do over spring break? Some students told me about trips to water parks, visits to different states others told me about how they sat on the couch and played video games all day long. There were a few that reported that they read tons of books! One second grader said there was 19 books she read after a visit to the library. A third grader told me he went to the library with Grandma and read five books. A sixth grader told me she finished the book she was reading and checked out the next one in the series, While Spring Break was a great time to spend with family enjoying each others company, doing fun things it was also great time to spend reading. I relaxed reading a book Mrs. Wotowicz gave me. A recent study shows that if students that struggle with reading, they should read 20 minutes per day in addition to schooltime reading. Those students will then make their expected goals by the end of the school year. That same study showed that 70% of the students that read more scored higher in Math and Science tests in high school. When a student reads 20 minutes a day they will hear 1,800,000 words per year and be likely to score 90% better than their peers on standardized tests. To become a better reader there is one thing everyone can do, simply read.
