A Thought Experiment -- July 6, 2018

A thought experiment:

You are on a large commercial jet carrying 350 passengers, at altitude, when the plane is suddenly jolted ("air turbulence"?).

The co-pilot comes over the public address system telling passengers that the plane has encountered a significant mechanical problem that affects the very viability of the aircraft but the pilot has a plan and seems to have the immediate problem under control.

In addition, the co-pilot tells us the pilot is in direct communication with air traffic controllers at several airfields, any of which could be used for an emergency landing.

Meanwhile, the engineers of the company who built the aircraft are also in direct communication with the pilot and co-pilot to work the problem. The co-pilot says he is genuinely concerned but that all indications are that the problem will be fixed. Meanwhile, he says folks should read the emergency checklist in the backseat pockets, pay attention to the flight attendants and follow their instructions. 

At this point, would you, if you were one of the passengers:

• walk to the cockpit and announce, that although you have no experience with aircraft, you have your own opinion how the pilot and co-pilot should proceed?
• ask for other passengers to join you with brain-storming on how to solve the problem, with the intention of bringing your ideas to the pilot and co-pilot?
• mind your own business and put your trust in the hands of the pilot, the co-pilot, the air traffic controllers, the airline folks on the ground, and the aircraft manufacturer?
