Science Exploration
Before we dove into our first science unit, my goal was to get our 6th graders interested about space and more specifically the planets that make up our solar system. Our first unit is the Geology of Mars. An understanding of other planets are needed in order to understand why Mars is one of the only planets other than Earth to be potentially habitable. In knowing this, I thought it would be the perfect time to introduce students to the Merge Cube. It catches students’ attention immediately, yet it also provides a deeper understanding of the planets in the Solar System.

The Merge Cube is about the size of your hand, yet with an app on the iPad, it has the capability to turn the Solar System into a hologram. The students are then able to interact with the hologram by seeing planets in a 360 degree view as well as things that orbit a specific planet such as moons. The Merge Cub app also allows students to further investigate information on a planet by clicking on one of interest and reading about it.
We were fortunate enough to have Merge Cubes for pairs of students to work together. This allowed one partner to navigate the iPad while the other held the cube. Throughout this time of discovery, students found beneficial information about planets as well and began to generating questions that specifically related to Mars. The Merge Cube allowed students to “hold” the Solar System in their hands and truly sparked their engagement for this unit immediately. I am so excited to see how deep our exploration can go!
