Reading is everywhere part 2

What is reading anyway?  We have to read In an age of technology reading can be forgotten.  Reading is necessary to get the technology to work.    These days parents and students can be caught up  with reading levels words per minute and  standardized tests.   Reading is  making meaning NOT word recognition.  Just because your child can read the word doesn't mean they are a good reader.   Good readers understand the meaning of what they have read.    Slowing down and re-reading something that didn't make sense is a great strategy for understanding the meaning.  Reading levels are not a race to the top.  Reading levels are a tool for the child's teacher.  It gives the teacher the idea of what a good starting point is for that student.  It will assist them to assist the child to find an appropriate book that they can read as well as comprehend.  Comprehension is the meaning of what we  have read.    Some good questions for parents to ask their children when they are reading are:  What do you think will happen next?  What's the problem in this story?, What do you think the character will do next?,  Can you put into your own words what has happened in the story so far?
