Shape Detectives

Kindergarten students are beginning their shapes unit in math. In order to introduce shapes, students were asked to become shape detectives! Students began by pulling shapes out of their mystery bags and identifying an attribute of the shape with their table teams. Some of the shapes were easily identifiable and students gave the name of the shape to their teams, other shapes were not easily named and students became creative when describing the shape to their teams. I heard things such as, "This looks like a house with a roof and this one looks like a pacman!"





Next, they used their imaginary magnifying glasses to search the classroom for shapes with their partners. Students pointed out some of the similar shapes they had seen on the shape cards and some new shapes. They again described the attributes of the shapes to their partners. After their shape hunt ended we discussed similarities and differences between the shapes in the their mystery bags and the shapes they found on their shape hunt around the classroom. Students decided that the shapes from their mystery bag were all flat and that some of the shapes they found in the classroom were flat while others were three-dimensional. They were able to look around the shape or touch multiple sides of the shapes. Noticing these differences will be helpful to students as we dig deeper into our shapes unit.



As a class we discussed that some shapes have a curve and other have only straight or angled lines. Students were then tasked with cutting, sorting and gluing shapes with curved lines and shapes with straight lines. With their partners, students took turns cutting out shapes and identifying the curve or straight lines on the shape. Partners had to agree on the shapes attributes before gluing the shape down. Working in partners and teams allowed students a chance to discuss attributes and ensure they understood the difference between curved lines and straight lines as they worked on their sorts. It also gave them an opportunity to defend their reasoning to the students they were working with.




Finally, students completed an independent activity where they matched shapes in the first column to objects in the second column. The independent practice allowed students the chance to see that shapes can have some attributes, such as number of sides or curves, that are the same and others, such as size or design, that are different while still being the same shape.



It was so much fun watching the students explore shapes in our classroom as we kicked off our new math topic. The kindergartners are eager to continue our exploration of shapes and their attributes as we dive in deeper to our shapes unit!
