Picking Stickies
Our kindergarten students have been talking about their identities in social studies. We have been focusing on the differences and similarities between people and the things that make us unique. The students had their pictures taken by polaroid and were able to watch themselves slowly appear. I asked them to study the pictures closely and choose their favorite thing about themselves. Many of them liked their smiles or their hair, I even had a few who tried to choose everything! We noticed shared hair colors, which of us had glasses, and even a few matching shirts.

Today we moved on to talking more about what's inside each of us: our likes, our dislikes, and the people we care about. We explored our similarities by doing an activity called "Picking Stickies". Each student was given six post-it notes to place on a clipboard. One at a time we drew a picture on each to represent a few things about ourselves: favorite animal, favorite food, favorite outdoor activity, favorite holiday, our family, and our favorite dessert. The kids did an excellent job of illustrating these facts about themselves!

Once everyone had their post-its ready students did a Stand Up, Hand Up, Pair Up to find partners. As they met with each partner they shared their drawings. If the students saw something they had in common they were allowed to take their partners' post-it and put it on their own clipboard. Some of the students had quite the post-it collection when we were done pairing up!

When we were done I asked the students to share some of the things they had learned about their classmates. We noticed a lot of similarities: corn dogs, bears, Valentine's Day. Even if we didn't find something in common, the students were able to learn a lot about one another and see some areas where they are unique!
