Holidays Around The World!
It is so important to value what our students bring to school. All the family traditions and celebrations that our students celebrate and everything that makes them proud of their culture. This month in ESL we are focused on honoring everyone’s holidays and celebrations. We are so excited to discover that even though we are from different parts of the world we celebrate in similar ways and that we have similar traditions.
In 5th and 6th grade the students have been reading and learning about “Holidays Around The World”. The students are learning about different holidays celebrated around the world. They are very excited to see that some people in different parts of the world celebrate the same holidays that they celebrate. The students are also enjoying learning about holidays that other students celebrate and some holidays that are new to them. I can see that the students are so eager to learn about each other’s holidays and the traditions that they celebrate. The students are working very hard on making Google Slides to do presentations of what they learned about different holidays and to present how they celebrate their favorite holidays. The students are using different sources to get the information like books, internet and their background knowledge about holidays. By using all these resources the students are learning how to do research and how to get specific information that they need for their presentations. I can tell that they are enjoying this project because I can see how excited they get when they share with me the information they found and also when they share the information that they know about their holidays.
In 2nd grade the students were sharing with everyone how they celebrated Thanksgiving day. They were using Word Web graphic organizers to write details about Thanksgiving. Then they use the graphic organizer to organize their ideas and write about how they celebrated Thanksgiving. After that the students used Kagan structures to share with the group how they celebrated and what they did that day. The students in this group love to share information so we had a great time talking about our Thanksgiving day. Some students had some funny stories to share and some other had very busy days. But at the end everyone really enjoyed sharing with everyone. And that is part of sharing a little part of what is important to us; celebrating family traditions and taking a moment to value our culture.
