Figurative Language is a Piece of Cake
For the last several weeks, fourth grade has been studying different types of figurative language in poetry. We have learned about onomatopoeia, hyperbole, alliteration, idiom, personification, simile, and metaphor. We have looked for these seven types of figurative language in a variety of poems and done some pretty entertaining activities as well. Students really shined when it came to idioms and personification. When working with idioms students had to draw the figurative and literal meaning of the phrase and then record their explanation on Seesaw. I was blown away with how creative some students got with their depictions. Students also showed their creativity when it came to personification. Each partnership was given a winter items to portray with human-like qualities. The giggles heard while students were sharing their work was contagious.Over the next two days, students will test their knowledge of figurative language with a winter challenge. Each student will be randomly assigned a type of figurative language and a winter item. Their job will be to combine the two to create a sentence and an image. Students will then record their explanation using Seesaw. At the end of the week students will have the opportunity to comment on one another’s work. I can’t wait to see what my students come up with!
