Look out! Here Come the Super Readers!
Did you know that our kindergartners have super powers? You would be amazed by the incredible skills they show off each and every day! The students want to become the BEST Super Readers they can, and so we have to practice hard.
Each day in reading we gather together to talk about which super power we are going to practice next. Sometimes we start off by singing our Super Reader song to get us in the hero mood. If you want to sing it, get ready for the "Super Reader" (Spider-man) song to be stuck in your head the rest of the day!
We have practiced 6 super powers so far this year (and we only have 2 more to go!). We started by working on our Pointer Power and Reread Power to help us make sure we were following along in the book correctly. Each word gets a single point and if we make a mistake we can reread to try again! We love to use our Partner Power by working with a friend to read a book. Picture Power has come in handy when we've come across those difficult words that our Sight-Word Power doesn't cover. And we most recently learned about our Sound Power to help us slowly sound the words out!
All of these super powers can be hard to juggle so we've had to practice each one and talk about when they come in handy. Today we learned about the importance of not giving up when we face a difficult reading challenge! Just like Superman or Spider-man, we have to keep trying all of our powers until we find the one for the job. It can be hard to push through on our own though, so we've turned to our Partner Power to help us out!
Using our Partner Power, the kindergartners have been working together in a Rally-Coach structure. They sit with a partner and take turns reading each page of the book. When one person is reading, the other is the coach. Just like a real coach, we can't do the work for our friends, but we can help give them advice and tips on what to do. We also make sure to encourage one another by letting them know when they do a good job!
Soon our kindergartners will be the best Super Readers you know!
