Third Grade: Searching for Story Elements
Students benefit in important ways from learning to identify and
describe the characters, setting, and significant events in a story.
The groups in third grade are working on recognizing story
elements to help them remember important details and to
help them retell the story. The students are practicing the
story elements with read aloud and stories of their own
experiences. The students are using graphic organizers to identify
the story elements in the text. These story element recognition
skills could be practiced at home with things that they enjoy
like who are the main characters in my favorite movie,
where is the setting, what is the problem and solution, and what is
my favorite part of the movie and why. The following is a link with
some Story Elements graphic organizers.
Second Grade: Searching for A Good Story
The groups in 2nd grade are learning about transitions and how
to use them to connect the events in a sequence. The students
are practicing events in a sequence by organizing pictures in a
story and writing about what happens from the beginning to the end.
They have to choose from a variety of transitions so they cannot
repeat the same transitions in the sequence. The objective of this
lesson is for the student to learn how to use different transitions
when they write a personal story. We are starting with basic
sequences like what they did on the weekend or what they did
yesterday. We are starting the stories by using Rally Robin to
share the stories with a partner and then by using Round Robin
to share with the whole group. After having the stories shared
the student are writing their own sequences by keeping in mind
that they have to use as many different transitions as they can.
5th and 6th grade: Searching for Habitats in the World
The students in 5th and 6th grade are learning about different
habitats in the world. They are going to have the chance to choose
a habitat in the world that they would like to learn more about it.
The students are going to use different sources to do a research project
and collect information such as location, climate/weather, animals
and plants in their habitats with the objective of doing a Slideshow
and present it to the group. First the students are going to read a book
about their habitats and they are going to use a graphic organizer
to collect information that might be useful for their slideshows. Then
they are going to use the computer to research more information that
they couldn’t find in the book. After gathering all the needed information
the students are going to start doing their slideshows keeping in mind
that they have to catch the group’s attention and that they have to
sound like experts about their habitats. The students are very excited
for the project because they like to learn about different animals and
they enjoy telling classmates about what they learn about different things.
