Seeing in Three Dimensions

As the year goes on and students are growing, the media and subject matter that they work with gets increasingly more difficult. Most classes are leaving behind drawing units and are beginning to work in 3 dimensions, going beyond flat simple drawings, or with new exciting materials.

Before break, first grade students learned how to draw different types of dogs and dog accessories. They then took this knowledge and designed a bag to give to the animal shelter, that were later filled with dog toys and other dog related pamphlets that they created in their regular classrooms. After discussing the permanent effects of sharpies on anything other than paper, students got to carefully use sharpies for the first time in art to outline their drawings before coloring or painting them.









Second Grade learned the difference between warm and cool colors, and painted warm and cool color designs on paper. They will then learn how to weave, and weave the two papers together to create their artwork. Paper weaving involves a lot of fine motor skills in order to weave the paper over and under, to cut the paper into strips to be used as the weft (the paper inserted over and under the warp), and to cut the warp (the stationary background with slits in it).



Third Grade is getting extra creative and coming up with their own painting techniques that do not use a brush in a traditional sense. Some ideas they came up with are painting with cotton balls, splatter painting, blow painting, painting with popsicle sticks, finger painting, painting with straws, painting with paper towel, sponge painting, scraping paint with cardboard, stamping paint with circle lids, etc.. They created non-objective paintings that look like designs to experiment with different types of painting without a brush. Now, they are working on creating a more realistic looking painting using the techniques they created and experimented with.

Fourth Grade is finishing up a sewing project that they started before break. Fourth grade students learned how to made a paper pattern that they then traced onto and cut out of fabric. They learned two sewing techniques, a running stitch and an overcast stitch, and then sewed together their fabric designs. Some students made ornaments, others made key chains, some made mini pillows, and others made little purses. Most students decided to make their art for others and give these as gifts to their loved ones.






Fifth Grade is learning about different types of balance: symmetrical, radial, and asymmetrical. They designed a project using the drawing center, collage center, painting center, or sculpture center, that incorporated balance somehow. Most students chose to use the sculpture center and are makings structures out of popsicle sticks, pipe cleaners, straws, and cardboard.





Sixth Grade's projects have been longer and more involved than the lower grades in preparation for Junior High. They have been working on their one-point perspective and Olympic themed projects for months, and just finished before break. One 6th grade class learned three types of one-point perspective drawings (drawing a room in 3d, a landscape in 3d, and abstract forms in 3d), and then they created a one-point perceptive project of their choice. The other class learned about art and architecture in Ancient Greece that was created for the Olympics, and had to come up with their own art project that went along with the theme. Naturally most of them chose to work with clay creating things like clay vases with Olympic symbols, shoes with wings to stand for the Olympic runners, and horse racetracks. Each class then switched units and created their new project.
