The Power of the Read Aloud
The read aloud - often overlooked, especially in the older grades, but one of the most powerful resources that can be used to teach. In sixth grade, we have made it a point to incorporate the read aloud into our day because we see huge benefits. Some of these benefits include creating a stronger vocabulary, providing enjoyment in reading, creating a safe place to explore difficult issues, and promoting bonding within the classroom.![]() |
Students conducting the read aloud |
Our current read aloud is Hello, Universe in which two of the main characters have disabilities. It explores how the world responds to these disabilities in both negative and positive ways. Tapping into ignorance as well as bullying. This story truly provides students with a clear image of how students who have a disability may feel misunderstood and builds student's empathy towards others.
The purpose of choosing this book was to begin conversations with students. We have an upcoming service project where we will be partnering with the Fox Valley Special Recreation Association (FVSRA). With this service project, we will be having a March Madness basketball tournament where members of FVSRA and 6th graders at Goodrich are on the same basketball team. We will also have a meet and greet at lunch prior to the game. This service project is intended to promote acceptance, kindness, as well as friendship.
We have had great discussions thus far using this read aloud as a gateway into difficult topics. I love the excitement the students have when talking about this service project. It will truly be a great experience for all involved!
