Fun with Dr. Seuss

Dr. Seuss's birthday was on March 2nd. In kindergarten we spent some time celebrating Dr. Seuss by reading his books and completing activities to go along with some of his most popular books. The first book we read was The Cat in the Hat. Students were then asked to make a hat with rhyming words from the -at word family. We brainstormed words as a class and then students were able to choose their favorite rhymes to add to their hat. Students also completed a writing activity where they decided how the story ended; would they tell their mom about what had happened that day or not? Students loved being creative with this! After their writing was complete students shared their ending with their table teams.

The next day we read Green Eggs and Ham. Students worked on cutting apart rhyming word eggs and then putting their rhyming puzzles back together. This game went home with students so that they can continue to practice with their rhyming word eggs. During our time with our sixth grade buddies students decided what food they would eat if they did not like green eggs and ham like Sam I Am. Their sixth grade buddies were able to help the kindergarten students sound out their words and complete their pictures. Kindergarten students love building relationships with their sixth grade buddies each week and had fun incorporating our Dr. Seuss theme into their buddy time.

We also read Fox in Socks. Students were asked to design a pair of socks and decide who their socks were for. During this writing activity they worked on completing a sentence frame by stretching their sounds. Some students decided to make their socks for silly Dr. Seuss characters, others decided to make theirs for a real person they knew. After they created their socks students shared their socks and writing with their table teams.

We had so much fun celebrating Dr. Seuss and incorporating his silly stories into our reading and writing time throughout the week! These activities helped students deepen their understanding of the characters and events in the stories we read. They also helped students to practice their writing, rhyming, speaking and listening skills.
