Addition Stars

We are wrapping up our Addition and Subtraction unit in kindergarten. Throughout the unit students have been working on adding groups of objects together and have slowly built up to writing addition and subtraction number sentences as well as solving addition and subtraction math facts. During the unit we used a variety of strategies to build up knowledge of addition and subtraction. Students counted objects, drew pictures, and used number bonds to add and subtract. As the unit comes to a close we are working on building up knowledge of math facts in order for students to become more fluent with their facts.

In order to continue to review and practice math fact fluency students participated in the Kagan structure, Flashcard Star. With this structure students are given a bag of math fact cards that are specific to them. The goal of this is to allow students to be able to practice math facts that they are working on as an individual student vs having the entire class practice the same facts. Students then find a partner and switch their fact card bags. One partner quizzes the other on two fact cards from their bag. If their partner gets the answer correct they put a check mark or star on their card, if their partner does not get the answer correct, the student who is quizzing them will look at the answer on the back of the card and coach their partner in order to help them get the answer correct. Once each student has been shown two of their fact cards, the cards go back into the bag and the bags are switched so that each partner has their original bag of fact cards. Students then repeat the process with a new partner. Once they receive two check marks or stars on one of their cards they no longer have to practice that fact and a new fact can be added into their bag.

It was wonderful to see the excitement on students' faces as they participated in this activity. Students also gained additional practice with facts when they coached their partner if they needed assistance to figure out the answer. Students had to come up with ways to help their partner figure out the answer without just telling the answer to them. They were holding up fingers to help them add and get to the correct answer or repeating the numbers to make sure their partner saw the fact correctly. Students were also giving positive praise to their partners if they gave a correct answer. Using this structure also allows the students to continually add new math fact cards to their bag as they master the ones that they started off with. This allows students to constantly practice new facts and continually build up their fluency of the addition facts. The students really enjoyed being able to walk around and work with different partners as they practiced their math facts. It also helped them build their confidence in the facts that they do know and are able to get correct right away. I look forward to continuing to use this structure with addition and subtraction facts as the year goes on.
