Battle of the Books (a.k.a. B.O.B.)

Battle of the Books is a reading incentive program for students in 3rd thru 6th grades. Students read books and come together in groups to demonstrate their abilities and to test their knowledge of the books they have read. While the older grades have had the opportunity to participate in this reading program over the past few years, it is the first opportunity for the third grade students to join in the fun.

Fourth through sixth graders have a total of 30 books that need to be read by the students in each group. Most groups equally share the responsibility so a few students in each group becomes and "experts" on between 3-5 books each. Students are also responsible for knowing the author of each book. Third through sixth graders, as well as several parents, enjoyed watching the competition today.

Third graders had the opportunity to participate for the first time this year. We had five groups of students; each team reading a total of 12 books each. These students have spent several months in class and at home reading the books, practicing questions, and memorizing authors' names. Many lessons are learned by students choosing to participate in the activity, including persevering until a long-term goal is achieved, as well as developing good sportsmanship for all members.

Second grade classes came into the L.R.C. today to watch this exciting event. A very competitive battle ended with one winning group eager to participate in a district competition in May. The winning group will compete against one team from each of the elementary schools in the district.
