What To Do With a Box is a picture book written by Jane Yolen. Within the pages she poses the question again and again with suggestions that it could be a library, a race car, a nook, an airplane or any number of other ideas. Those ideas are left open to the reader.The kindergarten class was posed with the same question. What would they do with a box? They began the design process by drawing their ideas on a piece of paper. The limitations were the size and shape of the box that they had previously chosen. They were offered additional supplies, including popsicle sticks, cotton balls, construction paper, crayons, etc...
Once the design phase was completed the students began to create their 3-D creations. They spread out across the library floor to begin. They were completely engaged in their activity as they tried to problem solve taking something from a 2-D space to a 3-D prototype. We ran into design flaws that then had to be modified, limitations of the materials available and the occasional change of mind as they delved into creating.
This introduction to design thinking allowed the students to solve the problem of what to do with a box. In the middle of the process they have already begun to say things like "Next time, I would change that part." or "I think it would be better with a smaller box." Encouraging students to look at a problem and immediately begin to think of ways to solve it is the goal of this activity.
