Getting to Know Each Other through Board Games
Starting at a new school can be a scary. Starting at a new school 3/4 into the school year can be even more intimidating, especially if you are a little shy. So how do we make a new Kindergarten student feel welcome without overwhelming her? We play a board game.
Our Kindergarten students played a board game called "All About Me". They rolled the die and moved their piece. Each square had a prompt for students to share something about themselves. Students had a chance to talk about their favorite season, food, color, etc. They also got to express what makes them happy, nervous, or sad.
Board games provide many learning opportunities for students. Through playing board games, students develop skills such as:
- number and shape recognition, grouping, and counting
- letter recognition and reading
- visual perception and color recognition
- eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity
Board games also teach important social skills like verbal communication, listening, sharing, waiting, taking turns, and interacting with others.
We learned a lot about each other from playing the game. Our new student realized she has a lot in common with her classmates.
