Interests and Point of View!
Persuasive Writing
Persuasive writing is a form of nonfiction writing that encourages careful word
choice, the development of logical arguments, and a cohesive summary. Young
children can be guided through a series of simple steps in an effort to develop
The students in 2nd grade are learning about persuasive writing. They are writing letters
about persuading someone about something. For example one of the letters is about
persuading their friends about what is the best pet in their opinion. They have to argue
their case and use convincing examples why their pet is the best to have at home. The
students have to include information from different sources as well as personal
experiences to try to make a very convincing letter. The students are using an outline to
help them stay on topic and to help them organize their writing. We are also using
defend their point of view.

Open Topic
The students in 5th and 6th grade are working on “Open Topics”. They are choosing
their own interest topics to teach everyone in the group something about their
favorite topics. The students are using research about their topics in addition with
using their background knowledge to show that they are the experts in the area.
For this project the students are using what they learned in previous lessons about
research, collecting data, selecting important information and using different
informational sources to make them more knowledgeable of their own topics.
This project includes all the language areas. For example the students have to read
information that they are going to include in their presentations.
They have to write about information that they know and information that they found
in different sources. Also they will listen when someone will present their topics and
they will speak in front of the group when they do their presentations. one of the most
important parts of the project is that the students will be working on something that
interests them and that they are excited to tell the group about.

Student interest in a topic holds so much power. When a topic connects to
what students like to do, engagement deepens as they willingly spend time
thinking, dialoging, and creating ideas in meaningful ways. ... Factoring for
student interests works well with instructional planning based on readiness
and learning profiles. (www.edutopia.org)
