March Mathness

March Madness is a time of year that always draws my attention. From dramatic upsets to overtime there is excitement in every game I watch. This year, I wanted my students to enjoy the tournament as much as I do.
After selection Sunday, students came to school and chose the team they would follow. This was very fun with drum rolls roaring throughout the classroom as each student picked their team. Students then researched important pieces of their chosen university.

This provided excellent college exposure to students introducing them to the best programs offered at specific universities in particular. Students conducted a gallery walk where they listed their top 3 universities from that class that sparked their interest.

Then, the real fun began as the first round of games were upon us! Students filled out a paper tracking their team's statistics. The information they needed to record was based on the mean, median, mode, and range of the top 5 highest scorers on the team. This ties in perfectly with the statistics curriculum and provided real life exposure to calculating the statistics of a true team.
Throughout spring break, students continued to follow their team and calculate their statistics. Today, as there are only 4 teams left, students were able to choose who they thought would win and conduct an analysis on the statistics of this team.Students are so excited to participate in this activity. I love seeing the engagement and of course, seeing the smiling faces when completing math!
