The Super Power of Sharing Knowledge!

It is very important for our EL (English Learners) students to interact in activities where
they can share what they know. When a student shares what they know it makes them
feel smarter and confident of having something to make the class better. For this
reason the EL students get many opportunities in the class to share what they
know so they can learn from each other and become more “powerful”.

In 2nd grade the students learned about how to organize the sequence in a story.
First they had to read the story by themselves. Then they got the story in parts and
they got together with a partner and Rally Robin the parts of the story to figure out
how did the story follow the correct sequence from beginning to the end. When
they agreed about the correct order they glued the parts of the story into a blank
piece of paper. At the end everyone shared their sequences and we compared with
the story.  Everyone was very happy because they said that by working together it
was much easier and they could figure out the story by sharing what they knew about
the story and by using clues like first, second, third, then, after that and finally.

In 5th grade and 6th grade the students learned about comparing and contrasting two different sports. They were very excited about the lesson because they got to choose the sports that they liked and knew more about. The students were grouped by their sport choices so they could share by using Rally Table with their partners what they knew about the sports. It was so exciting to see the students share what they knew about their sports. Some students shared that in their countries some rules were a little different for some sports because they did not have all the necessary equipment for the sport. When it was time to share with the other group they all were excited to learn more about the sports that they like and other sports.

I am very excited for the upcoming lessons when my students share more of what they
know so we can all learn from each other and become more “powerful”.
